Description

IC 2118 (the Witch Head Nebula) is a reflection nebula in Orion illuminated by the nearby blue supergiant star Rigel. One of several Halloween-shaped nebulae in the sky, this one has always seemed particularly creepy to me. It is a large (probably 5-10 pc) shell about 300 pc away, perhaps part of a very old supernova remnant in the Orion molecular cloud complex. Since it spans more than a degree on the sky and is very faint, it calls for a short focal length and a dark site.

Image produced from exposures taken at the Casitas de Gila guest houses in SW New Mexico.
